Portland Natural Birth : Birth Worker Wednesday

When I meet new people who ask what I do the response is usually about the same: wow, what an amazing job you have!  Being a midwife with Portland Natural Birth is an amazing job but the layers and depth of what it truly means to be a midwife is hard to fit into a 2 minute conversation with a stranger.

I have been attending births since 2006/2007.  I went to Birthingway College of Midwifery, studying for 3 years plus a 2 year apprenticeship in order to become a nationally Certified Professional Midwife and Licensed in Oregon.

Being a midwife means I spend an hour with all my clients at each prenatal and postpartum appointment. It means I provide individualized and relationship- based midwifery care to all my families.  I am the midwife that they’ll see for their appointments AND for their birth.  I keep a small homebirth practice, limiting my births to 2-3 a month, to ensure I can provide great care to all my clients.  They can reach me in between their appointments with questions and concerns. I am also a lactation consultant (IBCLC) so that gives me additional knowledge to help support new moms and babies, making sure their breastfeeding experience is a solid one.

As a midwife, I wholeheartedly support and practice informed choice with all my clients.  I provide labor support as needed and continue to assess the health and safety of mom and baby in labor.  I continue care for mom and baby through 6 weeks postpartum. It’s amazing watching families grow over these 6 short but full weeks!

Yes, being a midwife is amazing, tiring, heart filling, full of responsibility and intense.  It’s incomparable bearing witness to powerful women, sometimes realizing their full potential for the first time, and helping a family grow.

I look forward to all the future families I get to help through this journey!

    a bittersweet farewell…

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of Meg Ross Photography. After much reflection and consideration following the death of my husband and children's father, I have made the difficult decision to close my business. This decision was not made lightly, and it comes after a great deal of contemplation about healing from grief and how to best show up for my children..

I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for allowing me to be a part of your special moments. It has been an honor and a privilege to capture the beauty and emotion of childbirth for so many families. Your trust and support have meant the world to me, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of your lives.

    Hugs and oxytocin,
    Meg Ross
